The Government of Ghana has activated national emergency health protocols as part of efforts to protect the country from a potential Ebola outbreak following recent developments across the African continent.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced the decision after conducting an extensive inspection of Ghana’s frontline health and surveillance infrastructure on Friday, May 29.
The move comes after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, prompting countries across the region to review their preparedness plans.
Health Minister Inspects Key Entry Points and Medical Facilities
As part of the government’s response, Mr. Akandoh embarked on a working tour of several critical facilities responsible for disease surveillance and emergency response.
His inspection began at the Accra International Airport, where he assessed passenger screening systems, holding bays, and other health security measures designed to identify potential cases before they enter the country.
The minister later visited the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) and the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre (GIDC), two of Ghana’s most important institutions in disease detection, testing, and outbreak management.
The assessment was aimed at evaluating the country’s readiness and ensuring all systems are capable of responding swiftly should an Ebola case be detected.
Ghana Looking Beyond Traditional Screening Methods
While expressing satisfaction with existing screening procedures, the Health Minister noted that Ghana must continue improving its surveillance systems.
According to him, the country needs to invest in more advanced digital detection technologies to strengthen border security and reduce the possibility of human error during health screenings.
He stressed that preparedness is not solely the responsibility of health institutions but requires active participation from every Ghanaian.
Government Issues New Public Safety Advisory
Mr. Akandoh urged citizens, institutions, and local authorities to immediately reinforce basic public health measures across the country.
He emphasized that there is currently no confirmed Ebola case in Ghana and urged the public to remain calm while taking precautionary measures seriously.
“It’s very important for all of us to cooperate. We are taking activities at the land borders seriously. If there’s any case, we’re ready. There’s no cause for panic. Nobody should panic. All should adhere to the safety measures,” the minister said.
He also revealed that authorities have advised against mass gatherings as part of efforts to minimize potential public health risks.
Noguchi Assures Government of Testing Readiness
During the tour, officials at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research assured the Health Minister that Ghana’s laboratory systems are fully prepared to respond to any suspected Ebola cases.
Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Director of the Institute, stated that the facility’s biosafety laboratories are fully equipped and capable of conducting rapid and accurate testing should the need arise.
She noted that preparations have been strengthened to ensure prompt diagnosis and effective monitoring of any potential cases.
WHO Commends Ghana’s Early Response
Joining the minister during the inspection tour was WHO Country Representative to Ghana, Dr. Fiona Braka.
Dr. Braka acknowledged the unique scientific challenges posed by the Bundibugyo strain but praised Ghana’s proactive approach to preparedness and emergency response planning.
She commended the country’s decision to strengthen surveillance measures before any confirmed cases emerge, describing it as a critical step in protecting public health.
Jaysonlive Analysis
Ghana’s latest move reflects a growing recognition that early preparation remains the best defense against infectious disease outbreaks.
Although the country has not recorded any Ebola cases, health authorities are taking no chances. By strengthening border surveillance, improving laboratory readiness, and increasing public awareness, Ghana is positioning itself to respond quickly should the situation escalate.
For now, officials are urging calm while encouraging all citizens to follow health advisories and cooperate with preventive measures. News
