Ghana has received a major boost in its efforts to improve rural infrastructure and agricultural productivity after the World Bank approved a $500 million financing package for the Ghana Market Access and Connectivity Project (GMACP).
The ambitious project is expected to transform transportation links in rural communities, improve access to markets for farmers, create thousands of jobs, and strengthen the country’s agricultural value chains.
A Major Investment in Rural Development
For years, poor road networks and inadequate maintenance have posed significant challenges for rural communities across Ghana.
Farmers have often struggled to transport their produce to markets, resulting in high transportation costs, reduced profits, and significant post-harvest losses.
The new World Bank-funded initiative aims to address these long-standing issues by rehabilitating and maintaining critical feeder roads that connect farming communities to key commercial centers.
The project is expected to improve year-round access to markets, allowing farmers to transport goods more efficiently while opening up new economic opportunities for rural households.
More Than Half a Million People Expected to Benefit
According to the World Bank, the project will directly impact more than 550,000 people across the country.
Beneficiaries are expected to include over 350,000 farmers, approximately 250,000 women, and more than 310,000 young people.
The initiative is also projected to create over 5,000 direct jobs and more than 25,000 indirect employment opportunities through construction works, road maintenance activities, and related economic ventures.
World Bank officials say the investment is designed to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural competitiveness while improving livelihoods in underserved communities.
Over 1,000 Kilometres of Roads to Be Rehabilitated
The Ghana Market Access and Connectivity Project will be implemented by the Ministry of Roads and Highways and will focus on upgrading and maintaining more than 1,000 kilometres of rural roads.
The roads will span several regions, including Upper West, Northern, Savannah, Oti, Volta, Eastern, Ashanti, Bono, and Western regions.
These areas are among Ghana’s leading producers of key food crops such as maize, rice, cassava, and yam.
Improved road infrastructure is expected to reduce travel times, lower transportation costs, improve supply reliability, and help farmers reach larger markets.
The result could be a significant reduction in post-harvest losses while boosting food production and supporting national food security goals.
Climate-Resilient Infrastructure at the Core
Beyond improving connectivity, the project also places a strong emphasis on sustainability and climate resilience.
Roads and drainage systems will be designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and climate-related challenges, helping to protect investments and ensure long-term functionality.
The project will also support reforms aimed at strengthening road maintenance systems, including the operationalization of the Road Maintenance Trust Fund and the introduction of Performance-Based Contracts to improve upkeep of road infrastructure.
Boost for Agriculture and Economic Growth
The approval of the $500 million facility comes at a time when Ghana is prioritizing agricultural modernization, food security, and rural economic development.
By improving access to markets and reducing logistical barriers, the project is expected to unlock new opportunities for farmers, agribusinesses, traders, and local entrepreneurs.
